HalaSingapore - Projecting The Beauty of Singapore

Covid 19 and the pandemic that followed had devastating effects all over the world causing economic and social disruption and confining the people to the four walls of the home.

But the sky is clear and Singapore is welcoming people to relish in the magnificence it has to offer with Hala Singapore. A unique three-day immersive event showcasing the island state's vibrant culture and distinctive tourism landmarks using physical and virtual platforms.

Sponsored and executed by Singapore Tourism Board together with ITP Media Group, The HalaSingapore exhibited several intriguing displays but the one that captured more eyes was the visual treat presented by Ortmor above the industry’s most influential VIPs.

Ortmor's Immersive dining experience at the newly opened 'The View at the Palm' was truly an impeccable art bounded with creativity and technology. The HalaSingapore event showcased countries' incredible treasures like the natural wonders, fascinating cultures, the rich history using the art of projection mapping, and great content transforming the Nakheel Mall's top floor into a mini Singapore.

Client Requirements

After a brainstorming session well spent with the Singapore Tourism Board and ITP Media Group, the requirements and goals that needed to be achieved were clear as a crystal for us.

Singapore tourism wanted to stay front-of-mind and was on an excursion to create a hybrid consumer event that will combine the tactics of virtual activities and on-ground activation that inspires middle east travelers by showcasing the beauty of Singapore with an immersive experience.

A Solution to Win

To transform this thought into a reality, we had to come up with something up our sleeve combining technology and innovation to showcase the unbelievable beauty of Singapore highlighting the rich culture and uniqueness using Projection Mapping.

We also crafted a website for the event to reach out to more people around the world, broadcasting the charms of Singapore and the three-day HalaSingapore event showcasing the grandeur of Singapore.

The Challenges to Conquer

Recreating the beauty of a great country like Singapore was definitely a challenge for us. But what made this challenge even more difficult yet exciting was the wall that's gonna illustrate the allure of Singapore.

The View at the Palm’s top floor has a diamond-shaped wall design that was around 20m wide with an elevator door in between. So no standard photograph or video will fit into a surface like this.

So the real challenge was that we had to create everything from scratch customized to the rhombus-shaped wall, and portray attractions from different parts of the country to one single wall in a way that will wow the audience.

Process

Creating Something Impeccable

The first task on the list was to pay a visit to the site and take measurements. We took the measurements of the space scrupulously. And created the content, mapping everything based on these exact measurements. This helped us a lot to avoid even the tiniest mistake that will affect the overall experience of the show.

Prototyping

The projection wall we were working with was 20 meters wide and had a diamond-shaped pattern making it uneven. So creating content that maps to the uneven wall correctly and creating an immersive experience was definitely required going that extra mile.

To take the mapping process a step further and ensure accuracy, we created a miniature replica adhering to the measurement ratios of the venue and projected a test content to ensure that the content is mapped correctly on the uneven projection surface. The testing phase and corrections implied in the testing phase are continued until the output is deemed perfect and then the custom content production for the event is started.
Miniature replica to map the image correctly

Next up was to create a plot for the visual and our creative and strategic team put a lot of thought and effort to create a plot that will perfectly portray the charms of Singapore on the wall.
Creative Development

We carefully analyzed all the requirements and understood them clearly. After coming up with an idea, we crafted a synopsis first, combining the visual feast to be revealed on the wall. Then it was time to create a mood board to give life to the idea and get a clear picture of the art we were concocting.
Once the client is happy with the path we are headed, it was time to get into the detailed work and craft the magic that was about to unravel. The first visual was the clouded morning sky of the Singapore Changi Airport where a plane is getting ready to land. Each visual is transformed with beautiful transition effects matching the shape of the projection wall.
The next to reveal is the vibrant multicultural wall art illustrating the vast diversity in culture, religion, and ethnicity with a mesmerizing visual of the Peranakan shophouses of the Joo Chiat/Katong neighborhood and the traditional dance forms of Singapore like the Balinese dance, zap in dance and Bharathanatyam bound with imageries of merlion, Sri Mariamman temple - the oldest temple in Singapore and the oldest Jewish building on the synagogue street called David Elias building, giving a gist of Singapore.
The wall art also exhibited a projection mapping experience of the great places of Singapore like the Gardens by the Bay, National Gallery Singapore, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Singapore Pavilion of Expo 2020, Sentosa Island, Singapore S.E.A. Aquarium, Singapore Zoo, Arab Street, Chinatown, Merlion Park as well as Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands Hotel - each with breathtaking and engaging transitions.
Testing

To ensure the perfection our client deserves we tested the content multiple times in a regulated space aka the miniature replica with similar measurement ratios to the venue to eliminate the possibility of errors and make sure that the project is as flawless as possible.

Crafting The Virtual Kind Experience

Creating a website and social media pages as a virtual doorway to the HalaSingapore experience. With a user-friendly website, we helped our client to reach out to more audiences like explorers, foodies, and socializers from around the world.

This will drive awareness, engagement, and action targeted to the specific audience, improving the SEO friendly. We believe that creating a virtual platform can not only unlock a virtual door to the world but also create a triumphant campaign.

A Final Sight Worth a Thousand Wishes

As the work reached complete, aka perfection the campaign was presented to the audience, inspiring them to fly above the sky, taste the unique delicacies and witness the vibrant culture of Singapore.
